Apples

The flavors of all apples vary from tart to very sweet. Adam’s County’s Favorite Fruit!

  • Store in cool, dark places.
  • Apples have no cholesterol or sodium.
  • As a beverage, apple cider is always a fresh choice since it is made only by squeezing ripe apples. Served cool it refreshes, served warm it revives!
  • Can help fight tooth decay.
  • About 10% of an apple is made up of carbohydrate and 4% of an apple is made up from a variety of vitamins and minerals. The rest of the apple, more than 80%, is water.

Heirloom Varieties

  • Golden delicious apples have a thin skin, a sweeter taste than red delicious, and a firm, crisp, juicy texture.  Good choice for baking as its sweet flavor and firm texture hold up well in the oven.
  • Granny Smith apples are green and they were the first green apples on the American market.
  • Winesap apples are tart, even spicy, with a distinctive flavor and aroma of wine.
  • McIntosh apples were developed by a farmer named John McIntosh in Ontario, Canada, in 1870. This apple is the top-selling variety in North America today.
